Introduction :
In India, NGO stands for “Non-Governmental Organization,” and it refers to a legally constituted organization that operates independently from the government. NGOs are typically formed by individuals or groups with a common interest or goal, and they play a crucial role in addressing various social, economic, environmental, and cultural issues.
NGOs in India can take various forms, including trusts, societies, and Section 8 companies. Each form has its own set of regulations and requirements for registration. Among these, “society” is one common form of NGO structure in India.
A society in India, in the context of NGOs, is a legal entity created for the promotion of charitable activities. Societies are governed by the Societies Registration Act of 1860, which provides a framework for the registration, functioning, and dissolution of societies. To register as a society, a group of individuals with a common objective needs to draft a memorandum of association and rules and regulations, and then submit these documents to the Registrar of Societies in the respective state.
Once registered, NGOs or societies can engage in a wide range of activities, including but not limited to healthcare, education, environmental conservation, human rights, and community development. They often rely on donations, grants, and other forms of funding to carry out their activities and contribute to social welfare.
